Getting to know my friends better

I'm always pleasantly surprised when I get to know friends better, either directly or indirectly. Such is the case with one of the roommates I had in my last year of school.

I currently have a lot of time on my hands to do whatever I please. I've previously spent that time watching ridiculous amounts of movies, but I've finally remembered I have a book list of recommendations from friends and decided at the end of last week to delve into that list. The first book I decided to read comes at the recommendation of my roommate Morgan.

Last semester Morgan mentioned on multiple occasions to me that her favorite book of all times was The Poisonwood Bible. I had no clue what it was about, but I had heard the title before. Morgan wrote a paper on that book and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (which I have read before) and I read parts of that essay. So I had a general idea of themes throughout the book as I began to read it. It's been a really long time since I've read a book in that way before--with an idea of themes to look for--and it's been exciting to see how the author weaves such themes throughout the activities and thoughts of the characters.

But even more interesting is wondering why and how Morgan loves this book so much. Having lived with her for about 8 months, I feel like I know a little bit about her, but adding the layers of understanding I gain from this book she becomes an even more interesting person, and someone I want to hang out with and talk to more. I want to discuss the Poisonwood Bible with her, and hear her thoughts and reactions to things.

Likewise, the movie "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" was highly recommended to me by Morgan. I watched it twice in an 18 hour period, and the entire time I had the question in the back of my mind "why does Morgan love this movie so much?" I know why I immediately fell in love with it: it's a movie about a man who had grown sedentary and colorless in his life and job, but when given the opportunity to add experience and adventure found the energy and drive to actually follow through on those opportunities. I love color and spice in my life, so I always enjoy watching people find the paints to color their own life, and it gives me hope that if I ever get washed out, I can always find new colors to paint my life with. haha, maybe that's taking the metaphor too far, but that's how I see it sometimes.

After watching "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" and beginning to read The Poisonwood Bible, I've gained a greater appreciation for Morgan, and it reminds me how great it is to get to know people and share in their favorites. I hope I remember this as I get to know other people, so that I can get to know them in a fun and interesting way by sharing in some of their favorite books and movies, as well as sharing my favorite books and movies with others.

In case you were wondering, here are a few of my favorites:
