This is my first post (since I turned it into a bona fide blog) that I don't have a picture to accompany my post. But I want to talk about some stuff I've been doing around the house and such. Last week my mom gave me the task of making a roof for an area in our backyard that we want to turn into a storage area of sorts. It already has the walls, so I would really only have to make something that would stay on the walls, and keep the sun and rain from getting the stuff in it. It's not even a big area. It is an 8' x 9' area and one of the walls isn't even 6' tall! But I've told everyone I know about it, and everyone has their own ideas on how to make the roof. My mom wanted to just throw a tarp over it and be done with the area. And I was even going to create wood to staple the tarp to in order to keep it there and not blow away or anything. But then I realized that it wouldn't keep moisture out of it when it rains (which is rare, but does happen) so I decided to ask my dad what he thought would be best. I went to Home Depot last week to look at wood in case I wanted to actually build a wooden roof. That would start getting expensive, and I would have to paint the wood so that it would be weather proof. Plus I don't know what tools my dad has, so I didn't know how possible that would be. But anyways, yesterday my dad and I went back to Home Depot and bought some plastic roofing that is pretty weather proof as well. I'm excited because it will look almost professionally done, and all I need to do is screw a bunch of stuff in. But that's not what really I wanted to talk about in this post. I'll take pictures when I'm finished with it, and then I'll talk more about my experiences building it. What I do want to talk about is Home Depot.
I remember when I was little and my dad was going to do odd projects around the house, he would go to the hardware store, and sometimes if we were awake and being well behaved, he would bring us kids along as well. It was always so much fun going through the hardware stores because there were so many fake kitchens to play with, and windows to look through, and lights to judge, and other small things to play with. There was a smell of... promise while shopping. Promise that there would be something awesome to look at or some cool project that my dad would figure out to do and we could help by hammering in nails or something else small. I've been to Home Depot twice in the past two weeks, and for some reason there is still that adventure feel when I walk in the doors. I don't even know how to do anything around the house, but I want to learn so I don't have to rely on others when I have my own house. As I wandered the aisles after looking at the prices I wanted I decided that I can't wait to go shopping with my husband (obviously when I get married) for supplies so we can make our house look more beautiful or easier to live in. Whether buying gardening supplies for the outside or dishwashers and refrigerators so our kitchen looks more unified and organized I'm excited to use Home Depot or Lowe's more in the future.
The whole feeling I have in the hardware store reminds me of a scene in "500 Days of Summer" when they are in Ikea. They are just wandering through because, lets face it, Ikea is awesome! But they are also pretending that they are living in the many different rooms set up. I always thought it would be incredibly fun to do something like that. I pretend I'm living in the rooms when I go through Ikea regardless of who I'm shopping with, but it always seemed like it would be an uber fun date if you were really serious with someone ( or knew you weren't serious with someone at all). I guess just the idea of seeing other people's preferences when it comes to decorations without actually owning anything would be fun. Wouldn't cost anything but it could sure give you ideas for what you want to do. :)
