This weekend I spent a lot of time with my "new" singles ward. I call them "new" because I went to the same ward last summer when I was home, but since I have been away at school, there have been a lot of new people to move in and a few old people to move out. It's the same ward, but different at the sametime, just like all singles wards are. But anyways, I spent so much time with them because there was a weekend long service project. We had a goal to do 300 hours of service as a ward, so we volunteered at the cannery and at the bishop's storehouse on friday night and saturday. It was super fun, and the picture at left is us after we bagged beans for an hour and a half friday night. The hairnets were almost the best part. Almost because the actual service was even better than wearing hairnets. Always is. I had been to the cannery before, so I knew where that was, or at least what it looked like, if not the cross streets for it. But the exciting part was going to the bishop's storehouse and seeing what that was like. I don't know what I was expecting, but it was actually a lot smaller than I expected. And it was right next to the cannery, so that was cool to find out. They get their supplies possibly from the cannery, whichwould be why they are so close. :) It was cool working there for 7 hours on saturday though, because they really enjoyed the help. They had us cleaning the shelves the food goes on, which they said only happens about once a year, so that was special. It was a little bit hard to clean the shelves because there were also lots of people with carts going by at the same time and trying to take the stuff they needed, but it only took about 4 hours to get 4 aisles of food clean, then we got to restock shelves and help patrons around the store and clean more stuff in the back.
Sunday was the last day of my singles ward escapade. I went to church and was there for the normal three hours. And then there was a "break the fast" afterwards which kept me another hour. That was yummy, and allowed me to meet even morepeople from the ward who hadn't had made it to either of the service projects in the two days before. The break the fast ended at 5, but there was going to be a fireside at 7. I was going to go home, but I didn't want to waste the gas going home to come back so soon (it's about a 20 minute drive one way, so I won't be home long enough to do much anyways) so I decided to just stay at the church and wait it out. I told Nate (a friend from the ward) I was tired and he offered to lend me the cot in the back of his car, but I didn't really want to sleep. I wanted to bask in the glorious sun! I took a chair outside but then a bunch of other people with similar thoughts as me came out to join me. We took some blankets from the Relief Society room and laid out on the grass for two hours, chatting and dosing and such. That's the picture just above, where a bunch of us are laying on the grass, just hangin'. It was all in all a very fun, fulfilling weekend and I made plenty of new friends while also renewing old friendships.
